Director's Note:
The interviews in SUPPORT INDIE were filmed in early 2021, while the world was dealing with much uncertainty. Lock-downs/restrictions and social moods varied depending on the week, which lead to an inconsistency in tone while working on this documentary.
Although the film doesn't directly discuss what was happening in the world outside of the arts community, the tone of the film does reflect the greater ambivalence that most of us were feeling during 2021. The hope was to submit this film to various festivals, but now that things are beginning to return to normal, I can't foresee Support Indie finding much festival support as audiences will be eager to move on and once again escape through art. Because of this, I am choosing to release Support Indie for free on YouTube.
I am incredibly proud of all of the work that went into this film, and am extremely grateful for the conversations that I was able to have. While the film's message about the importance of accessible arts will always be relevant, my hope is that one day this film will be appreciated as a sort of snapshot into the collective mindset of artists from 2020 to 2021.
Thank you for watching this documentary, and thank you for supporting independent artists!
Sincerely,
Ashley Good
